“High-Quality GHG Accounting: From Skills Development to Professional Recognition”

The virtual event will take place on 6 October 2026, from 16:00 to 17:30 CEST (UTC+2) as part of the PCCB Network Capacity-Building For Series.

The event brings together the Institute of Sustainability and Carbon Footprint LLC (ISCF) and the Greenhouse Gas Management Institute (GHGMI) to address the importance of strengthening professional competencies in greenhouse gas accounting, measurement, reporting and verification (MRV).

The session will explore how high-quality training, competency development and professional recognition can strengthen the credibility and consistency of GHG accounting and verification practices.

Ambassador Dr. Mostafa Elsayed Sherbiny, Founder, President & CEO of ISCF, will contribute to the discussion on skills development, professional recognition and capacity-building for GHG accounting and verification professionals.

The event also provides an opportunity for peer-to-peer exchange and discussion on strengthening institutional and professional capacity to support climate transparency.

ISCF’s participation reflects its continued engagement in international climate capacity-building and its work to develop professional competencies in GHG accounting, carbon footprint assessment, MRV, verification and sustainability.

5 October: Q3 certificate price. The European Commission published the Q3 2026 CBAM certificate price at EUR 82.32. Earlier quarterly prices were EUR 75.36 for Q1 and EUR 75.28 for Q2. Prices are quarterly in 2026 and weekly from 2027; purchases begin in February 2027. Official prices and methodology.

30 September: 50-tonne threshold assessment. The Commission assessed the threshold using the period 1 April 2025–31 March 2026. It found that the threshold would exempt 0.87% of embedded emissions, below the 1% limit. This assessment does not announce a change to the threshold. Read the Commission update.

28 September: resources for verifiers. The Commission brings together verification and accreditation guidance, registry access procedures, operational documents and training videos covering registration, change requests and collaboration with non-EU installation operators. ISCF announces the EU CBAM MRV Platform

ISCF announces its EU CBAM MRV Platform, bringing a shared digital identity to work across iron and steel, aluminium, cement and fertilisers. The platform is presented as a practical environment for organising emissions information and strengthening monitoring, reporting and verification readiness.

The ISCF development programme focuses on structured industrial inputs, reporting-period calculations, data traceability and professional capacity building. The objective is to connect production records with the information needed for review.

This launch announcement is based on information supplied by ISCF. The platform is an ISCF product, separate from the European Commission’s CBAM Registry. Confirm features and workflows with ISCF for the relevant sector and version.

Original opinion — A calculation is not an evidence system

Start with a question. When an emissions result changes, can the team explain why? An answer should connect the result to production volumes, source records, factors and the period being assessed. A dashboard that cannot support this conversation leaves a gap between presentation and understanding.

Keep the chain visible. My recommended operating discipline is to retain the path from source data to final output. Record who supplied an input, which unit was used, when it was revised and why. Distinguish a missing reading from a genuine zero. Reconcile totals before interpreting trends.

Preserve useful daily detail. Daily records can reveal gaps and unusual patterns that disappear in an annual total. Their value lies in diagnosis and traceability. The reporting-period result still needs a coherent method, consistent boundaries and reconciled activity data.

Review before release. Give someone other than the preparer the opportunity to challenge the result. Ask for the source of a selected number, inspect a changed assumption and follow an adjustment through the calculation.

The management decision. Invest in the evidence chain at the same time as the calculator. A reliable workflow helps an operator understand its own performance and makes professional review more efficient. Confidence comes from being able to explain the number.

Original opinion — Build competence alongside digital tools

Technology needs accountable people. Software can organise inputs, repeat calculations and preserve a record of changes. A capable team must still judge whether a production boundary is appropriate and whether an unexplained input should be accepted.

Train through the actual workflow. I recommend short exercises built around the team’s own reporting tasks: identify a source record, check a unit conversion, investigate a gap and explain a result.

Define responsibilities. Name the owner of each input and the reviewer of each output. Production, laboratory, energy, finance and sustainability staff may hold different parts of the same evidence chain. A clear handover preserves institutional knowledge.

Measure understanding. Completion of a course is a starting point. Ask participants to demonstrate how they resolve an inconsistent reading or locate evidence for a calculation factor. Assess judgement as well as familiarity with the interface.

Make improvement routine. A digital platform and a competence programme should develop together. Use review findings to improve the workflow, and recurring workflow problems to shape training: prepare, review, learn and improve.

Registration open — Greenhouse Gas Lead Verifier (GHG-LV)

GHG-LV programme announcement: starts 25 October 2026

Starts Sunday 25 October 2026. Live online, Sunday–Tuesday–Thursday, 6:00–10:00 p.m. Cairo time. Three weeks, nine sessions.

Training is provided by Carbon Markets and the Evaluation and Certification of Green Products. Examination and certification are provided by ISCF within its stated ISO/IEC 17024 personnel certification framework, subject to applicable requirements.

Topics include GHG accounting and boundaries; ISO 14064-1, ISO 14064-2 and ISO 14067; verification under ISO 14064-3; planning, risk and materiality; QA/QC and uncertainty; sampling and evidence; findings, verification statements and reports; and leadership of verification teams.
