CFB 27 Defending Mobile Quarterbacks: Spy Technique and Contain Rush Strategy

Mobile quarterbacks are the most frustrating players to defend in CFB 27. Your coverage is perfect, your pass rush is closing in, and then the quarterback scrambles for twenty yards because no one was assigned to contain him. Defending mobile quarterbacks is about limiting their improvisational plays and forcing them to beat you with their arm from the pocket. The quarterback spy is your primary tool. A spy is a defender assigned to mirror the quarterback and tackle him if he scrambles. The spy does not rush and does not drop into traditional coverage -- his sole responsibility is the quarterback. This simple assignment turns quarterback scrambles from fifteen-yard gains into two-yard gains or sacks. Visit cfb27.com for spy technique guides and defender archetype recommendations. Choosing the right spy defender is critical. Speed is the most important trait -- your spy must be faster than the quarterback he is chasing. Acceleration is second. Linebackers with high Speed and Acceleration make ideal spies. Safeties can work too, but putting a safety in spy takes him out of coverage. Rush lane discipline complements the spy. Your defensive ends should rush with contain technique, staying wider and maintaining outside leverage rather than sprinting upfield. A contain rush prevents the quarterback from escaping to the outside, funneling him back toward the middle where your spy is waiting. The spy can also be used as a coverage defender. If the quarterback does not scramble, the spy is essentially a zone defender in the short middle of the field -- exactly where many mobile quarterbacks throw when their first read is covered. Blitzing against mobile quarterbacks is high-risk. If the blitz does not get home, the quarterback has fewer defenders to navigate and more space to scramble. Forcing the mobile quarterback to throw from the pocket is the ultimate goal. Mobile quarterbacks are often less accurate as pocket passers. Take away the scramble and you force them to operate outside their comfort zone. For complete mobile quarterback defense strategies, cfb27.com has everything you need.
